Giant Egg From Caramel

Today we got a giant egg from our chicken Caramel. This egg was not like her others this was GIANT! That egg must have hurt…. A lot. Her usual eggs are already bigger than the store bought free-range extra large eggs, but this compared to an extra large egg makes is look like a small Pekin egg! (Exaggerating A Bit) (A lot….) (You get the point).

Caramel’s Giant Egg Next To Store Bought Extra Large….

Pekin eggs are quite tiny. We have a Pekin called Laura, she lays small eggs. But quite big when you crack in a pan for fried eggs. Pekin eggs are the size as a ping pong ball. The same size as Silkie egg! (Not Exaggerating) (Honest) (Look It Up If You Don’t Believe Me).

Water And Food Feeder

Thank you to all who donated money towards helping ex-battery hens! You have helped me buy a bigger food and water feeder for the ex-battery hens! I now have to get a chook house and secure the fence! Then I can get my first few ex-battery hens! I bought a combo of 20 litre water holder with watering cups and a four litre capacity anti-pest food feeder. It costed 96 dollars for a good waterer and feeder combo. I also got free dried meal worms. It says that meal worms are good for a chickens. I got these from Dine-A-Chook.

Water Feeder

Today I have researched about water feeders and how to make one. To make this water feeder you need….

. 2 or more water cups

. 5 gallon food grade bucket

. Toughening tape

. 3 Inch drill bit

As well as learning to research to find a good video I also learnt about science.

Did you know that water always finds it’s own level? So that means if you fill up a pipe and hold it up a centimetre from a bowl you’ll think it would stop as soon as the bowl is full, but no it keeps going until the water is the same height as the water out side the pipe. But the watering cup stops the water from freely flowing until a chicken comes and presses down the lever and the water is released. It kind of words like a mouse/rat waterer.

When I get the equipment I can build the waterer. Down below is the video I got off youtube.

Buying Food

A few days ago I brought two bags of chicken food, and my Dad bought me a food container so the wild rats don’t get in. The bags of food costs fifteen dollars each so I bought two. I have raised in total one hundred and seven dollars in three weeks! So thirty dollars minus one hundred and seven equals seventy seven. I have made a Business Balance Sheet on Excel so I can keep track on how much money is spent and earned.

One bag of chook feed and another in the box. Lara (On top of box)

The blue marker on the picture just crosses off he food and water feeders because I haven’t bought them yet. My year to date is currently seventy seven dollars.

Expenses part of Balance sheet.

I still need to fix the fence and make a bigger chicken pen. Then I can rescue some Rx-Battery Chickens. Ex-Battery Chickens usually have no feathers when you first rescue them, so you have to keep them warm.

Ex-Battery Hens

Knitting isn’t my thing but I’ll have to learn to knit so I can make some chicken sweaters so the featherless chickens can keep warm. The sweaters act like feathers for them.

Launching My First Bussiness

Me Selling Parkrun Designs.

Yesterday I launched my business, I have sold around ten cards and got thirty dollars. Many people didn’t have any money to buy one  so they are coming back next week. Thankyou for all who has helped ex-battery hens by buying my cards. On that day we were also displaying other projects linked to the UN’s Global Goals, that we need to achieve by 2030. I think my business project links to the goals of ‘Life On Land’, ‘Reduced Inequalities’, ‘Sustainable Communities and Responsible Consumption and Production.

Next week for all of the people who wanted to buy one that didn’t have any money on them, I will be at Arthur Davis Park this Saturday 16th September. You can order from 6:30 to 7:00  or 7:30 to 8:00.

Orders And Prices

I think I am going to sell my patterned Parkrun stickers for minimum two dollars.

It’s fifteen dollars for a big pack of laminates and ten dollars for some markers. So that’s twenty five dollars in total, and to buy an ex battery hen costs around ten dollars so I need to at least sell thirteen stickers to look after an ex battery hen. More battery hens will be better though…

Firstly to kick start I need to buy more food a bigger water container a bigger food container expand the area and the coop and to fix the fence.

Food costs twenty one dollars the water and food drinker and feeder costs fifteen dollars to expand the area and the coop would cost twenty dollars plus the markets the laminates and the first hen. In total the first week I need to to get one hundred and one dollars or more. Then all I need to do is get more money to recur more ex battery hens to our wonderful yard.

Normal Order: To get one of my beautiful creations on the back of your Parkrun card, you need to firstly pay some money and give me the Parkrun card you would like me to stick on a picture. The card must be a standered sized and must be card or paper without any contact or lamination. Then the next week I will bring it back with the picture of your choice.

Special Order: If you want the same Parkrun card as someone else you’ll have to write down whose Parkrun card you want to match up with, and I will make the exact same.

Special Special Order: If you haven’t found something you have liked but still want a Parkrun Patterened Sticker Back you can custonmize your own or give me a picture you would like. You can also give me a discription, but don’t think I will match the exact picture you were thinking.

This preparation will take up to 2-3 weeks because firstly you might have a Parkrun card but it has contact on so you will have to wait next week to bring me a plain card. Then I will have to go home and stick and laminate the card, so next week I can bring it back to their owner. If you have an already plain one it will take two weeks.

Just to remind you again all of the money is put to recusing ex battery hens so I can bring them home and let them live a happy life.

Welcome To Happy Hens

Hi my name is Aurora,

Welcome to Happy Hens! This blog is about my new business,  helping battery hens. One hundred percent of the funds will go to giving the hens a happy life.

I am planning to sell patterned Parkrun barcodes, on the back of each park runner barcode the art is unique.

The rescued hens now can live happily free ranged with Laura, Caramel, Lara and Arum in our lovely garden for its rest of its life.

I’ve got a lot of things to do and learn. I have set up a blog and my logo design. I need to expand my chicken area and coop so more chickens can fit in, I have also got to design, organise, promote and sell the art. I have set up this blog so you know how I am going.

Our existing chickens aren’t ex-battery hens but they will be a part of  any new rescued chickens’ family. Caramel is an adult caramel coloured Plymouth Rock and lays big beautiful tasty eggs. We got her off another family, and now had her for a year. Laura is an adult golden Pekin, she lays tiny round eggs, surprisingly big when you make fried eggs, Laura is turning two this Sunday. We got her when she was three weeks old. Lara and Arum are only chicks, we go them about a month ago, they don’t lay eggs yet, but hopefully soon!
